3 ways to increase squarespace website visibility to search engines

One of Squarespace's biggest selling points is that ALL of their websites & templates are optimized for search engines by default. This means you aren't left struggling with plugins and don't have to spend hours trying to learn the in's and out's of how to optimize your site for SEO. Nope, Squarespace takes care of all of that on the back end and it's glorious.

But did you know that there are a few quick and easy tricks that will make your Squarespace website even MORE compatible with search engine visibility?

Increase your Squarespace website's visibility to search engines in 3 easy steps

In this video you will learn:

How to add or edit your site's description
How to update your site's SEO description
How to update page descriptions

You'll also learn about how certain Squarespace templates do or don't show site & page descriptions, and how to make the right choice for your website.

1. How to add or update a site's description

Home menu > Settings > Basic Info > Enter or edit site description

This is where you can put in a quick overview or bio of your website. Note: the site description will display on a few Squarespace templates (including the popular Five template) so be sure to keep this in mind if you're working off of those templates.

2. How to update the SEO descriptions

Home menu > Settings > SEO > enter SEO description

This field can appear in the search engine results for your website. Stick to a short & general descriptive sentence (or two) that takes care of the overall website content.

3. How to update page descriptions

Home > Pages > click gear icon next to the page to open the page settings

Fill in the Navigation title and Page title fields. Note: Page titles appear in browser tabs and search results, and are indexed by search engines. The page titles can be "beefier" (e.g., Lottie Legal LLP About Page) than the Navigation titles which should be much simpler since they only appear in the navigation menu (e.g., About).

You can also add a page description but this step is optional. This is similar to the Site description and SEO description but is focused on a particular page. NOTE: filling out this field may affect the text that appears on your site as well as what appears with your website in search results. Be sure to test this out to see if/how it affects your template (as you can see from this tutorial, the page description field DOES show up in the Harris template used in the demo).

Final Thoughts

Squarespace is so great because they take care of all the heavy lifting in SEO but by doing these 3 easy steps, you'll make your website even more attractive to search engine results. Sounds like a no brainer to me so give it a go today and let me know what you think!
